A quiet place to read books you can keep

FreeReadsy exists so English readers can open a classic on a phone, finish a chapter on the bus, and download the same book as an EPUB without creating an account. The catalog is limited to public-domain works, chiefly from Project Gutenberg, because that is the honest way to offer free downloads.

What you will find

• Original introductions written for this site, not copied from encyclopedia dumps.
• Genre pages for classics, mystery, romance, science fiction, philosophy, and more.
• A browser reader with larger type and a paper theme.
• EPUB downloads served with a clear Gutenberg license notice.

What you will not find

We do not host newly copyrighted novels, textbooks still in print, or “cracked” files. If a living author still owns a book, it does not belong here. That line also keeps the site eligible for responsible advertising.

Advertising

Pages include labeled advertisement slots. When Google AdSense is connected, those slots may show third-party ads. Ads never sit on top of the text you are trying to read, and they are hidden behind a simple “Advertisement” label until a publisher ID is added.
